Like most parents, once a school holiday starts to loom, I begin to think how am I going to entertain my children all through the holidays with activities that a) don’t cost the earth and b) activities that suit different age groups?! Fortunately we live in a beautiful part of the country with tons going on – it just needs a bit of knowledge about what there is to do and a lot of energy to do them! I also use https://www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk/things-to-do/south-west/devon for inspiration. A fantastic online resource that has done all the hard work for you, all you need to do is choose what you’d like to do.
We woke up on bank holiday Monday to glorious sunshine. Knowing the beaches would be packed we decided to head up onto Dartmoor and visit Becky Falls Woodland Park https://www.beckyfalls.com/. Becky Falls is an iconic Dartmoor landmark set in a boulder strewn valley with beautiful waterfalls running all the way through and down towards Bovey Tracey. It had been a long time since we last visited but I knew the stunning scenery, woodland walks and climbing up the falls would be a lot of fun for everyone and we weren’t disappointed.
Just a 15 minute drive from the A38, Becky Falls is easy to find. The entry price includes access to all the walks, the waterfalls, the animal collection and shows and the cafe and giftshop. After grabbing a quick coffee we decided to follow the Red route on the map as we wanted to see as much of the waterfalls as we could. There is also a Blue route which is a less steep and a shorter walk and a Purple route which is much steeper and only recommended for fit people! It was such a hot day, it was a welcome relief to have the shade from the forest and a paddle in the falls. The walk takes you down one side of the falls then climbs you back up the other side. Most of the paths are easy to walk on but it is quite steep and rocky in some places (not particularly suitable for the silly flipflops I was wearing!).
After spending a glorious couple of hours walking and climbing, as well as a lovely picnic next to the waterfall, we headed back up to the cafe for an icecream. The children loved seeing the animals and although it was really busy, it didn’t feel too crowded. Anywhere on Dartmoor is a fantastic day out but if you’re looking to find a spot that has a little bit of everything then I’d highly recommend Becky Falls.
